THOU (Jacques-Auguste de). *Universal History*... With a continuation by Nicolas Rigault; the *Memoirs of the Author’s Life*, a collection of documents concerning the Reformation... And Augmented with Historical and Critical Remarks by Casaubon, Du Plessis Mornay, G. Laurent, Ch. de l'Ecluse, Guy Patin, P. Bayle, J. Le Duchat, and others. The Hague, Scheurleer, 1740, 11 volumes in-4, portrait, and 2 plates. Contemporary half-blond calf binding, ribbed spine, title labels, panels decorated with a grotesque motif alternating with a Rococo ironwork design, trimmed edges. (Contemporary bindings).—The portrait appears after the preface. The interior of the volumes is in very fresh condition, with wide margins. Most of the headbands are worn down; a few spine joints are split 3 or 4 cm; corners are slightly bumped. Ex-libris bearing the coat of arms of the Château de Chaltrait (20th century) in each volume. One of the two large-format editions published in the 18th century. Titles printed in red and black; the author’s first name is spelled “Jaques-Auguste.” “De Thou’s erudition is immense; he has read nearly all French and Italian historians, and he has gathered a great deal of firsthand information... His impartiality is renowned. One might even say that, in his efforts to maintain a balance between the two sides, de Thou sometimes tipped the scales in favor of the Huguenots, or at the very least the Politiques...” (S.H.F.). - (Quérard IX, p. 457 – S.H.F., 775).
