METASTASE (Pierre). Works of Abbot Pietro Metastasio. With Dissertations and Observations. Nice, Société typographique, 1785, 22 volumes in-12. Bound in 12 volumes in aubergine half-basane, smooth spines, horizontal gilt fillets, tail frieze, marbled edges. (Early 19th-century bindings.) Copy printed on bluish paper. The interior of the volumes is generally fresh; however, there is some browning at the corners or along the lower margin of half a dozen leaves, and a faded blue tinge on the last few leaves of volume 3; the spines of the bindings have faded to a fawn color and bear a shadow left by a label; some hinges are fragile. Engraved portrait as a frontispiece in Volume 1. Text in Italian. Volume 1 begins with a biography of Metastasio by Carlo Cristini. The first fifteen volumes contain the works; the next five volumes contain the letters; and the last two are devoted to “Osservazioni di vari letterari sopra i drami...” Pagination errors in Volume 11.
