LHUER (Victor). Costumes of Auvergne and Bourbonnais. Preface by Mrs. Y. H. Monceau. Paris, Arc-en-Ciel, (1941), In-4, 6 unnumbered folios: title page, preface, and table of contents—48 plates. Loose sheets, with a laced folder illustrated with two coats of arms in color. — A fresh copy. First printing of this remarkable series of 48 drawings colored by the Ranson Fils workshops. Each plate, depicting one or two subjects, bears the date and location of the field survey, as well as a brief description. The Museum of Folk Arts and Traditions undertook the project of compiling all the traditional costumes of Europe. This collection began with France, and the first provinces featured were Auvergne and Bourbonnais. Many of the costumes depicted belonged to the Folklore Museum in Moulins and to Madame Monceau, with whom Lhuer stayed while creating his drawings. The vast project was never completed, and only a few provinces were published (including Brittany). Printed in a run of 1,000 copies, this series has become rare.
