Johann Christoph Storer (attributed to) (Konstanz 1611–1671) Hercules and Omphale Oil on canvas 123.5 x 100 cm. Framed The attribution of the painting to Johann Christoph Storer was suggested by Odette D’Albo in a communication to the owner. The painting depicts the mythological episode of Hercules and Omphale, in which Hercules—condemned to serve the Lydian queen as punishment for the accidental murder of Iphitus—is forced to perform traditionally feminine tasks, while Omphale assumes his attributes. Johann Christoph Storer settled in Milan around 1640 and remained in Lombardy until 1667. His style evolved from the late Mannerist and naturalistic tendencies of Ercole Procaccini the Younger toward a more pronounced Baroque style under the influence of Rubens. This painting reflects that stylistic development, combining elements associated with Procaccini, Francesco Cairo, and Rubens. Private collection.
