Vincenzo Camuccini (Rome 1771–1844) Saints Jude Thaddeus and Simon Oil on canvas 20 x 29 cm. Framed A pair of paintings mounted on a single support and stretcher. An old inscription in pen on the reverse of the frame reads: “BARON CAMUCCINI / (...) 1770”. These are preparatory sketches for the oval compositions executed by Vincenzo Camuccini in 1822 to be rendered as a mosaic above the altar housing the relics of Saints Jude Thaddeus and Simon in St. Peter’s Basilica. The two apostles are depicted in half-length, three-quarter view, with their inspired gaze directed outward. The present Saint Simon closely corresponds to the drawing published in the catalog of the 1978 monographic exhibition of Camuccini at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome, here rendered in color with remarkably free, rapid, and painterly brushwork. W. Apolloni Gallery, Rome; private collection, Rome.
