Simone Pignoni (Florence 1611–1698) The Penitent Magdalene Oil on canvas 84 x 72 cm. Framed Sandro Bellesi attributed the painting to Simone Pignoni’s mature period, highlighting its high quality and intense mystical pathos. The Penitent Magdalene is depicted with traditional symbols of repentance, including a skull, a metal hair shirt, and a loaf of bread. The sensuous rendering of the figure and the soft sfumato are characteristic of Pignoni’s devotional painting. S.
