A KOTO WAKIZASHI, PROBABLY BIZEN (13TH CENTURY) A Wakizashi in a shirasaya (wood storage scabbard) Probably Mid-Kamakura (c. 1250 to 1280) period Sugata (configuration): Hon-zukuri, iori-mune, chu-kissaki, koshi-zori Kitae (forging pattern): Ko-itame mixed with mokume Hamon (tempering pattern): Choji midare, ko-ashi and yo, based in nie deki Bōshi (tip): Ko-maru Nakago (tang): O-suriage with two mekugi-ana, ending in kurijiri Habaki (collar): Silver covered over copper Nagasa (length from tip to beginning of tang): 21.26 in (54 cm) Sayagaki translated as follows: Sankōhin (参考品) – “ Study Object” Kotō (古刀) – “Old Sword” Mumei (無銘) – “Without Inscription” Shimonoseki Shiritsu Toshokan Zō (下關市立圖書館藏) – “Property of the Shimonoseki City Library” The present work is highly evocative of works produced in Bizen (one of the great sword production provinces of old Japan) during the Kamakura period (1185–1333), such as those produced by the smiths of the Ichimonji (福岡一文字), Osafune (備前長船) and Hatakeda (畠田派) schools. With its beautiful Choji midare hamon rich in nie deki, slightly darker Jigane (地鉄) and slightly prominent hada (肌) an attribution to the Hatakeda school seems probable. However, an attribution to the Fukuoka Ichimonji or early Bizen Osafune schools could be reasonable alternatives.
