Scroll thangka depicting a Green Tara in her paradise, Tibet, 19th century Polychrome pigments on cotton canvas, mounted in a silk border. Green Tara (Drolma Jangku) is depicted in the center, seated in lalitāsana on a double lotus, her right leg slightly extended and her right hand in varadamudrā, holding the stem of a lotus flower whose petals bloom near her shoulder, while her left hand, drawn toward her heart, holds a second flower. She is surrounded by lush vegetation of lotuses and flowering tendrils and is depicted in front of a multi-level palatial structure, evoking her paradise of the Sandalwood Grove (Khadiravana). On either side of the deity stand, presumably, Mārīcī, yellow-orange in color, and Ekajātī, blue-black in color—her two traditional companions in this configuration. The upper section features several Buddhist figures and masters of the tradition, some depicted within circular medallions, while the lower register depicts various deities, celestial beings, and scenes of offerings. Mounted on silk with a blue background and brown border. Painting dimensions: 58 x 38.5 cm; overall dimensions: 115 x 63 cm Significant wear, pigment loss and alteration, tears, and gaps in the canvas; the silk border is heavily worn, with tears and fraying.
