Six-panel folding screen depicting a wooded landscape, Japan, Edo period, 19th century Pigments, gofun, and gold leaf on paper. This large six-panel Japanese folding screen features a continuous design set against a luminous, patinated gold background. The landscape is structured around two main trees, whose branches elegantly intertwine at the top. A weeping willow—recognizable by its long, slender green branches that hang vertically—extends its branches toward a Japanese cherry tree with a sturdier, gnarled trunk, covered in a dense bloom of small white flowers. These cascades of flowers and foliage converge and blend at the top, creating a natural canopy suspended above the ground. A winding earthen embankment runs through the lower part of the composition. At the base of the sturdiest trunk, on the right, a bush of Japanese camellias (tsubaki) blooms with bright red flowers and dark foliage, surrounded at its base by clumps of dwarf bamboo. The entire scene is framed by a fabric border with geometric patterns and a black-lacquered wooden border. 133 x 275 cm Flaws.
