Large circular plate made of Arita porcelain, Japan, Edo period, second half of the 17th century Decorated in underglaze blue in a style inspired by Chinese “kraak” porcelain. The center features a landscape consisting of a rocky mound bordered by a river from which a doe drinks, enlivened by tufts of vegetation, tall leafy stems, and several blooming flowers resembling chrysanthemums or peonies, accompanied by small insects or butterflies in flight. The design is rendered in varying shades of cobalt blue with gradient shading. The body is divided into broad, radiating compartments alternating with narrower panels. The large compartments alternately contain stylized floral bouquets and stylized precious objects, likely the “Uchide no Kozuchi” (打ち出の小槌)—the magic mallet that grants wishes—and the “Hôyaku” (宝鑰)—the key to the treasure storehouse. The narrow compartments are adorned with knot and tassel motifs, while the dividers and panel edges feature geometric lattice or scale patterns. This decoration, arranged in compartmentalized fields, is characteristic of Arita ware produced for export during the late 17th century. Diameter: 45.8 cm
