Josef Maria Olbrich (1867–1908) for Thonet Art Nouveau sofa in natural, patinated solid beech with rounded shapes. Upholstered seat and backrest. Stamped: Thonet on the underside (founded in 1819). Circa 1900. Dimensions: H: 87; W: 142; D: 52 cm Founded in 1819, Thonet is the world’s oldest furniture manufacturer. That year, cabinetmaker Michael Thonet (1796–1871) opened a furniture workshop in Boppard, Germany. A fervent advocate of the Biedermeier style, he specialized in chairs, tables, and storage furniture characterized by clean lines and minimal ornamentation, with an emphasis on functionalist principles. In the 1830s, Thonet’s steam-bent wood furniture, such as his famous Boppard Chair (1836), earned him international acclaim. His designs were lightweight, durable, and comfortable—a combination that was still unknown in Europe at the time.
