JOHANNES GEBHARDT_x001D_ Prenzlau 1930–2020 Falkendorf Temple. Sculptural collage in the style of a building with a colonnade, made of assembled and joined fireclay bricks, ca. 1991. Handwritten “G2” on an adhesive label on the base. Height: 30 cm. Width: 29.5 cm. Depth: 15 cm. After completing his pottery apprenticeship, Gebhardt initially produced earthenware with figurative engobe painting; he later switched to a light-gray fireclay body and organic forms, so-called “bud vessels.” It was not until the late 1980s that the artist returned to his earlier sculptural work, creating constructed sculptures from discarded, partially hollowed-out bricks with weathered surfaces that evoke a sense of transience.
