FRIEDRICH VON GÄRTNER_x001D_ Koblenz 1791 – 1847 Munich Six gentlemen snuffing snuff, presumably well-known Munich figures. Pencil drawing, 1823. Signed in brown pen “Fr. Gärtner Archit.”, dated and labeled “Munich” by another hand, as well as a text (partly in dialect) in pencil below the figures arranged in pairs (including: “There’s just nothing like a fresh Marino”; “It is the very same that His Majesty, the King of France, himself is in the habit of snuffing” and “The Baron will see for himself...”—partly supplemented by another hand) and numbering (presumably to identify the figures). On chamois-colored vélin. 17.8 x 32.2 cm (mat cutout). Mounted under a mat. Slightly dusty and with foxing mainly along the lower edge and in the upper right corner. Gärtner studied architecture in Munich, Karlsruhe, and Paris. Beginning in 1820, he held a professorship at the Munich Academy and became director of the Nymphenburg Porcelain Manufactory in 1822.
