38 - DANIEL GRAN - Umkreis_x001D_ The four elements: Water - Fire - Air - Earth. Four allegorical depictions in high oval, personified by putti, on one sheet. Pen and brown ink drawing with gray wash. Verso pen and ink sketch in brown with gray (two putti wrestling). On laid paper with trimmed, unidentified watermark. 20 x 15.7 cm. Margins slightly irregular. One medallion (earth) trimmed below with slight loss of image. In the center the pen sketch on the reverse slightly showing through. Slightly browned and slightly stained mainly in the margins. The present depictions are probably sketches intended for a ceiling fresco, which create a painterly effect due to the bold strokes and expressive washes. Richard Herrlinger Collection, Vienna (Lugt 5818). [ms]
