François Jean Louis Boulanger (1819–1873): The unveiling of the statue of Jacob van Artevelde in Ghent, oil on panel, dated (18)63 Work: 46 x 31,5 cm Frame: 60 x 45,5 cm This painting depicts the ceremonial unveiling of the statue of Jacob van Artevelde on the Vrijdagmarkt in Ghent on 14 September 1863. The bronze statue was created by the Ghent-based sculptor Pierre De Vigne-Quyo (1812-1877). To mark the unveiling, grand celebrations took place on the Vrijdagmarkt, attended by, among others, King Leopold I, his sons and his daughter-in-law. Boulanger was presumably an eyewitness to the festivities and depicts the event with great accuracy. Three paintings by Boulanger depicting this scene are known to exist, two of which are from a similar vantage point and one from a different position. One of these versions is in the collection of the STAM ( link). Provenance: - Ex-collection Raoul Van Trappen. - A private collection, Belgium.
