Isidore Meyers (1836–1916): High tide, oil on canvas marouflated on panel Work: 42 x 31,5 cm Frame: 55 x 46 cm Isidore Meyers was the teacher of a.o. Franz Courtens, Adrien-Charles Le Mayeur de Merprès, Romain Steppe, and Franz Callebaut. During his stay in Paris, between 1855 and 1858, together with Adriaan Jozef Heymans, he became acquainted with the French Barbizon painters, and his opposition to the formal academicism prevalent in landscape painting grew during this time. He was one of the first to react against the conservative style that dominated the Antwerp school of painters, such as Ferdinand de Braekeleer, Henri Leys, and Henri de Braekeleer, at the time.
