Willem Schaeken (1754–1830): The Virgin Mary, oil on panel, dated 1817 Work: 32 x 22,5 cm Frame: 44 x 36 cm Added to this lot is the book: F.J. Van den Branden, 'Geschiedenis der Antwerpsche schilderschool', Antwerp, 1883. The painter Wilhelmus Schaeken (1754-1830) was born in Weert on 29 December 1754. At around the age of seven, Wilhelmus left for Antwerp, where he became a student at the Academy of Fine Arts. At that time, the people of Weert looked more to the cities of the south than to those of the north for artistic inspiration. At the Academy, he studied under the landscape painter J.D.F. Borroken, among others. Wilhelmus, however, chose to devote himself to history painting, which was then considered the most prestigious genre for an artist. He also produced grisaille paintings, works executed in various shades of grey or brown. From 1773 to 1775, Wilhelmus spent time in Italy. On his return, he resumed his work at the Antwerp Academy, where he taught until 1817. He is particularly known for having been the teacher of the painter Philippe-Jacques van Bree (1786-1871). Wilhelmus Schaeken left behind a considerable body of work, including, notably, the paintings 'The Resurrection of Lazarus', 'Ganymede' and 'The Judgement of King Midas'.
