Gaston De Mey (1933-2015): 'Cricyrlatheb XV', acrylic on canvas, dated 1994 140 x 119,5 cm Gaston De Mey studied at the Art Academy in Eeklo from 1952 to 1963. From 1968 onwards, De Mey made a deliberate choice to construct his artworks using letterforms, grouping them into typographic bands and structures. He opted for a predetermined arrangement of letters, utilizing black tones against white backgrounds and -exceptionally -colour. In his work, legible language dissolved -much like in philosophical deconstruction -into a more essential yet unreadable arrangement of letterforms within various geometric shapes and formats. His work was inspired by the Constructivist movement, and specifically by Piet Mondrian, to whom he dedicated a series of pieces. From 1993, De Mey also incorporated Greek, Cyrillic, Latin, and Hebrew characters into his paintings. In this way, he introduced the concept of globalization into his art.
