Jules Léon Montigny (1847–1899): Landscape with a farmer and his horse, oil on canvas, dated (18)84 Work: 60,5 x 40,5 cm Frame: 89,5 x 70 cm Jules Montigny was since 1855 a student at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels, where he trained under François-Joseph Navez; however, he spent little time with this first teacher, who taught him the fundamentals of drawing. Paul Lauters, a family friend, introduced the young man -who had been studying independently in the countryside -to the genre painter Henri Dillens at his studio in Schaerbeek, where he spent a year learning the finer points of painting. He began painting animals and landscapes in 1863 and subsequently came into contact with the Tervuren School. From then on, Jules Montigny's preferred themes were inspired by Hippolyte Boulenger -a leading figure of the Tervuren School whom he had known for years, as Boulenger had often been a guest of Montigny's parents, who wished to help him given his precarious financial situation.
