Bernard Neyt (1825-1880): Interior of the Aula Academica in Ghent, mixed media on paper Work: 73,5 x 52 cm Frame: 87 x 66,5 cm The Aula Academica of Ghent University is a university hall dating from 1826, located in the Voldersstraat. Not long after the founding of Ghent State University, it was decided that the new university required its own building. On August 4, 1819, the foundation stone of the 'Aula Academica' was ceremoniously laid -on behalf of King William I -on the site of the former Jesuit church in Voldersstraat. The 'Aula' became a neoclassical masterpiece designed by the young Ghent architect Lodewijk Roelandt, marking the beginning of a distinguished career for him. Its façade was inspired by the Pantheon in Rome, featuring a prostyle portico of eight Corinthian columns topped by a pediment; these eight columns had originally belonged to the infirmary of Saint Peter's Abbey. A frieze bearing a Latin inscription commemorates the fact that the building was commissioned by William I. The interior of the 'University Palace' was equally impressive, with the Academic Council Hall serving as its highlight. The imposing building was inaugurated on October 3, 1826, with a ceremony, processions through the city, and various speeches.
