A Flemish carved oak 'Saint Barbara' figure with remnants of polychrome design, 16th C. H 34 cm Barbara was the daughter of a nobleman. He didn't want suitors to see his daughter and locked her up in a tower. To appease her, he allowed her to leave the tower occasionally. On one of these outings, Barbara converted to Christianity. Her father reacted furiously and handed her over to the governor. The governor had her tortured, but miraculously, her wounds disappeared during the night. In desperation, her father beheaded his daughter himself. Provenance: - Purchased from a Basque Country antiques dealer in the seventies, and with the current owners through inheritance.
