A Flemish 'ostrich hunt' wall tapestry, Oudenaarde, last quarter 16th C. 313 x 246 cm The wall tapestry is indisputably based on an engraving of an ostrich hunt after Stradanus, published in 'Venationes Ferarum, Avium, Piscium', Philips Galle, Antwerp, ca. 1578: in the foreground, three huntsmen on horseback, armed with spears and aided by dogs, close in on an ostrich; beyond, mounted horsemen and dogs come from left and right, pursuing the ostriches towards a ditch into which they are seen to fall. ( link) In the foreground a lion can be seen attacking a horse. This depiction is inspired by the work of Adamo Ghisi, see: 'Speculum Romanae Magnificentiae', Antonio Lafreri, Rome, ca. 1575.
