54 - PEREZ AUGUSTO (1929–2001) LOVERS. 1977. Bronze. 210 x 122 x 54 cm. Signed and stamped by the Chiurazzi Foundry, Naples. PROVENANCE: Il Fante di Spade Art Gallery, Milan; Private collection, Milan. EXHIBITIONS: Città Spazio Scultura 80, Rimini, July–September 1980, ill.Il Fante di Spade Art Gallery, Milan, ill. *Lovers* is part of Augusto Perez’s sculptural exploration centered on the human figure and its existential dimension. The two figures, united in a tight, vertical composition, are modeled using an intense and tormented material—characteristic of the artist’s style—in which the bronze retains all the force and irregularity of the sculptural gesture.Perez approaches the theme of the couple without any idealization: the bodies seem to merge while simultaneously maintaining their own individuality, giving rise to a tension between closeness, physicality, and unease. The heavily worked surface and the expressive distortion of the figures accentuate the work’s dramatic character.
