Albert André (French, 1869-1954) La Leçon de Piano oil on canvas signed Albert André (center right) 26 1/2 x 48 in. (67.3 x 121.9 cm) Property from The Estate of Arthur Schleifer, Jr., Boston, Massachusetts. This lot is located in Philadelphia. Framed: 39 x 60 x 4 in. The unlined canvas is in overall good condition. The varnish has slightly discolored. There is craquelure throughout, particularly in the more thickly painted areas. There are a few pinpoint dents at the top left and center. There is scattered staining on verso. Under UV light, there is evidence of the varnish and a few small areas of potential inpainting at top. Additional images available upon request. We would like to thank Mme Flavie Durand-Ruel for her kind assistance with the cataloging of the present lot. A certificate of authenticity dated February 2, 1992 and signed by Evelyne Yeatman accompanies the work. Provenance: Hilde Gerst Gallery, New York. Sotheby's, New York, sale of May 14, 1997, Lot 184. Acquired directly from the above sale by the present owner. Lot Note: La Leçon de Piano, a pleasantly calm composition that is full of a suspended inner life, is characteristic of André's work. It references another similar painting, titled Grand intérieur au piano: la musique and dated to 1938, which is recorded in the Archives Durand-Ruel.
