Henri MOREZ (1922–2017) Buvette Ink on paper, signed lower right. H. 32.5 cm - W. 50 cm Born in Romania before the war, Henri Morez—whose real name was Hers Askenasi—arrived in Paris in the 1930s. There he met Emmanuel Mane-Katz, a painter of Ukrainian origin, who introduced him to the Parisian art scene. Henri Morez’s career was multifaceted. As an illustrator for numerous newspapers such as *France Soir* and *Le Figaro*, Morez combined humorous subjects with balanced compositions. His work was particularly recognized by René Goscinny, with whom he maintained a close friendship. But Henri Morez was also a painter in his own right, whose style evolved as his career progressed. The thickly applied paint of his early years gradually gave way to a more fluid brushstroke, particularly in his studio scenes. Katia Granoff dedicated a solo exhibition to him in 1968, establishing Henri Morez within the Parisian art scene. He subsequently exhibited regularly at the Paris Cultural Center and at the Transposition Gallery.
