He asks Jurgis Kasimirovich BALTRUCHAITIS (1873–1944), then Lithuanian ambassador to Moscow, to clarify the situation with the Estonian ambassador. "Dear Yuri Kazimirovich, Please help us in our unfortunate predicament (...) On August 4, 1921, the former chairman of the Estonian Control Commission in St. Petersburg, A.G. Orga, was searched (his belongings inspected) in a diplomatic railcar in Yamburg, and gold items were confiscated. (I do not know to whom he was taking them), and along with his belongings, manuscripts by St. Petersburg writers were confiscated (Org heads the Reval Book Court; he is a bibliophile), and among the manuscripts were three irreplaceable ones I had given them to him for safekeeping. There is nothing political in them. Litvinov was in Reval, and, as Org told me, he promised to return the manuscripts to him in August. Before leaving for Berlin, I inquired at the Estonian *Foreign Ministry* with Sarva, the head of Russian affairs, and learned from him that this matter was no longer being handled by Litvinov, but by Menzhinsky. And that the manuscripts would be returned, and that the Estonian ambassador in Moscow knew about them. How much time has passed * * I recall— there are no manuscripts; they won’t hand them over! I told Z.G. Greenberg (the representative * in Berlin and (...) A request to you: 1) We need to find out where my manuscripts—the ones seized (on August 4 in Yamburg) by Orga—are located; the Estonian ambassador in Moscow can tell us this 2) Once you’ve found out, speak with L.B.
