Giovanni AMENDOLA (1882–1926) A set of 1 C.A.S. and 4 L.A.S. in Italian addressed to Maria Ivanovna BALTRUCHAITIS, née Olovyanichnikova (c.1879–1948), all dated between June 7, 1906, and August 11, 1912: -Handwritten letter: a long silence on his part, because he lost his card. “Every word is a mistake, and many times more mistakes are found in a single word! What a horror, what a fright! It was only because of the fear I felt that I finally decided to leave the Rome train station, where for many days and many nights I remained weeping over his departure,” Papini published *Il tragico quotidiano*. -L.A.S. of November 29, 1906, mentions Vannicola and Brioussov in connection with publications. -L.A.S. dated October 26, 1907, from Rome, requests a photo of the “two Jurgis”; it announces the birth of a baby the following month: “Papini has married! Could you have imagined it? Neither could I. He was one of the few men I believed to be completely immune to the marriage epidemic (...) What news do you have from Moscow? How are Briussov, Bieley, etc., etc.—all those numerous knights of adventure? To think that perhaps now I could be part of their world!” -L.A.S. dated March 2, 1908, in Rome: “The Vannicolas are still in Rome; perhaps they’re giving up on the idea of leaving. And Vailati is here too, who tells me he hopes to greet you when he writes to you. Rome is always the same—is it itself, or is it monotonous? Gorky was here two months ago and attracted a great deal of attention from the journalists.” -Letter of August 11, 1912, also signed by Eva Amendola (she and her husband warmly thank Maria Ivanovna) and Giuseppe VANNICOLA. ENCLOSED A handwritten letter from Eva Oscarovna KÜHN (1880–1961), wife of Giovanni AMENDOLA (1882–1926), addressed to Jurgis Kasimirovitch BALTRUCHAITIS (1873–1944) “Dear brother,” dated April 26, 1912, in Florence “Every evening, when all is quiet in the house, and I am resting from the day’s toil and worldly cares, my thoughts are entirely focused on climbing your ‘mountain path.’” MC Provenance -Jurgis Kasimirovich Baltruchaïtis (1873–1944), Lithuanian diplomat and poet. -Their son, Jurgis Jurgissovich Baltruchaïtis (1903–1988), historian. -His wife, Hélène Baltruchaïtis (1908–2004), née Castel-Focillon, daughter of Henri Focillon (1881–1943). -Then through their descendants.
