Jurgis Kasimirovich BALTRUCHAITIS (1873–1944) A significant collection of about twenty handwritten letters, in Russian, addressed to Maria Ivanovna Olovyanichnikova (c. 1879–1948) in an envelope labeled “Letters Jurgis sent me, 1898 - Письма Юргиса ко мне, 1898 г.", written before they became engaged without their families’ knowledge in 1899. The letters also contain poems. "Here is the beginning of the poem I mentioned in my letter yesterday (...) The rest isn’t quite ready yet. Don’t be afraid for me, my sweetest. You’ll find me alive. Perhaps I’ll even be laughing in tonight’s letter. This unbearable situation won’t last. For your sake, God is helping me grow and protecting me. (...)” “Here is the beginning of the poem I wrote about yesterday (...) The rest isn’t finished yet. Don’t be afraid for me, my eternal little feather. You’ll find me alive. . Maybe by evening I’ll even burst out laughing in this letter. . Right. . It’s just temporarily unbearable . . God will help me grow and keep me safe for your sake . . Judging by the soot and the blood flowing through my veins, I’ll endure three more * * . . When I walk on stones, I feel that each one is an extension of my being. I will circle the world three more times . . *only* those who die. Until tomorrow . . I kiss you.
