A ‘FAMILLE-ROSE’ PORCELAIN DOUBLE SNUFF BOTTLE JINGDEZHEN, 1830-1870 To Be Sold Without Reserve The two joined vessels of elongated ovoid form tapering to a cylindrical neck with wide mouth and rounded lip and a recessed circular foot surrounded by a protruding rounded foot rim, painted with a continuous design disposed across both halves of the bottle of a four-clawed dragon and fenghuang in clouds, chasing a flaming pearl with the sun shown partly hidden by the clouds, the foot of one inscribed wan and the other yu (together meaning ‘playful jade’, the jade standing for any precious object) both in iron-red regular script, the lip gilt Height: 5cm Provenance: Ko Collection (218/1S, acquired in Beijing, 1921) Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 7th May 1998, (a copy of the original invoice available) The dragon and fenghuang were a decorative feature of weddings and particularly of Imperial weddings. The four-clawed dragon here, however, is not for the Imperial family. Four-clawed dragons were granted to members of the Official Class who attained a certain rank, and anyone else at the whim of the emperor, suggesting that this was probably made to commemorate a wedding for an official Ω This Lot was imported outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission scheme. 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer’ price and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium’. If proof of export outside of the UK can be provided for this item within 3 months of the sale date, then the VAT can be refunded. Please contact us for further details and shipping advice
