A RARE IRON-RED PORCELAIN ‘FENGHUANG’ SNUFF BOTTLE, JINGDEZHEN 1780-1860 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of compressed quatre-lobed form with a waisted neck and raised, rounded lip rim, painted with a continuous design of two Fenghuang flying on a ground of formalized scrolling floral design with peony blooms, with traces of gilding Height: 4.7cm Provenance: Clare Lawrence Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 24th November 1996, (a copy of the original invoice available) No other bottle of this form and decoration seems to be recorded. The small, quatrelobed shape is unusual in itself and the decoration makes it even more so. The Fenghuang is usually associated with the empress, while the dragon represents the emperor, although it was not, like certain dragons, limited to Imperial use Ω This Lot was imported outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission scheme. 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer’ price and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium’.
