A YIXING STONEWARE ‘FAMILLE-ROSE’ ENAMELLED ‘YIN YANG’ SNUFF BOTTLE 1810-1870 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of compressed ovoid form tapering to a cylindrical neck with a flat lip and deeply concave foot surrounded by a protruding, rounded, oval foot rim, the narrow sides each with two vertical channels cut into the stoneware, painted on one side with a beribboned beauty standing beneath the moon beside some formalized clouds, and on the other in blue, white and pink enamel, with bamboo growing beneath the sun, the foot and the inside of the neck enamelled in creamy white Height: 5.5cm Provenance: Robert Kleiner & Co., London, November 2001 Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 16th March 2002, (a copy of the original invoice available) This is an unusual subject combination for Yixing, coupled with a distinctive use of a limited palette for the bamboos, with a white ground enamelled over in dark blue to leave a faint halo around all the painted detail, giving it emphasis, and a touch of rather formalized realism as light dancing off the leaves.
