A COPPER-RED AND UNDERGLAZE-BLUE PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE IMPERIAL KILNS, JINGDEZHEN, FOUR CHARACTER MARK AND PERIOD OF DAOGUANG, 1821-1850 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of compressed pear shape tapering to a cylindrical neck with convex lip and recessed, flat oval foot surrounded by a protruding, rounded, oval foot rim, painted with a continuous landscape scene with a fisherman seated in a boat on a river in a mountainous landscape, the foot inscribed in underglaze-blue regular script Daoguang nian zhi (‘Made in the Daoguang period’) Height: 6cm Provenance: Christie’s, New York, 21st September 2000, lot 141 Robert Hall, 2001 Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 7th November 2001, (a copy of the original invoice available) This is a rare bottle among underglaze-red examples from the nineteenth century in being of one of the standard forms for snuff bottles rather than of cylindrical shape so common with this type of decoration, in having such a fine balance between the conflicting properties of this mineral that you can either have fine colour or fine line but not both, and in having a Daoguang reign mark. Many nineteenth-century underglaze-red bottles have apocryphal Yongzheng or Qianlong reign marks Ω This Lot was imported from outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission regime 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer” and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium
