A ‘FAMILLE-ROSE’ PORCELAIN ‘ZHONG KUI’S SISTERS WEDDING’ SNUFF BOTTLE JINGDEZHEN, 1821-1850 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of compressed spherical form with a cylindrical neck and flat lip; painted with a continuous scene of the demon-queller, Zhong Kui, attended by two demons and fanning himself astride a donkey as he leads his sister, seated in a wheeled sedan-chair attended by three more demons, to her wedding ceremony in a rocky landscape with foliage, the lip unglazed Height: 5cm Provenance: The Ko Collection (953/4, acquired in Shanghai, 1931) Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 7th May 1998, (a copy of the original invoice available) This is a unique form for a Daoguang enamelled porcelain. It is fired upside down either on a rod inside the neck, or on its lip, hence the lack of glaze on the lip, thus allowing the footless form to be glazed right underneath in a continuous design of grassy ground. Although the subject of the wedding of Zhong Kui’s sister is a common enough one in Chinese art of the Qing dynasty, this composition is otherwise unknown on Daoguang porcelains Ω This Lot was imported outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission scheme. 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer’ price and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium’. If proof of export outside of the UK can be provided for this item within 3 months of the sale date, then the VAT can be refunded. Please contact us for further details and shipping advice
