A BLUE AND WHITE PORCELAIN ‘XIYOU JI’ SNUFF BOTTLE JINGDEZHEN KILNS, 1820-1870 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of elongated ovoid form with a cylindrical neck and recessed circular foot, painted with a continuous scene illustrating the Xiyou ji (Journey to the West) showing the four main protagonists in landscape, the neck with a band of five bats above doubled lines at the shoulders, the recessed foot unglazed Height: 8.6cm Provenance: David Hausmann Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 16th July 1995, (a copy of the original invoice available) This is an extremely unusual subject for a snuff bottle, strangely, since it was drawn from one of the most popular allegorical novels in the entire culture. For a coral example with the same subject, see Robert Hall, Chinese Snuff Bottles IV, no. 16 Ω This Lot was imported outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission scheme. 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer’ price and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium’. If proof of export outside of the UK can be provided for this item within 3 months of the sale date, then the VAT can be refunded. Please contact us for further details and shipping advice
