A YIXING STONEWARE ENAMELLED ‘LANDSCAPE’ SNUFF BOTTLE 1810-1860 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of compressed ovoid form with a cylindrical neck, flat lip and concave oval foot, painted with a continuous scene of two storeyed buildings set amidst trees and rocks in a lake-side setting, with a figure in a boat poling his way towards them beneath a flight of birds, all on a creamy-beige crackled ground, the lip left without enamel Height: 6cm Provenance: The Ko Collection (acquired, Jinanfu, Shandong province, 1926) Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 7th May 1998, (a copy of the original invoice available) This is an excellent example of the standard landscape enamels of Yixing during the first half of the nineteenth century. There are a number of them known, all probably by the same workshop and all delightfully painted evocations of Jiangnan life, with its many lakes and rivers and country residences among the hills and mountains south of the Yangzi River. They differ mainly in shape and condition. The form here is an elegant and comfortable one, and the painting beautifully disposed around its surfaces, it is also in excellent condition for one of these enamelled Yixing bottles, which are often well worn because of the softness of the enamels used at Yixing Ω This Lot was imported outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission scheme. 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer’ price and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium’.
