A CARVED PALE YELLOW-GLAZED PORCELAIN SNUFF BOTTLE JINGDEZHEN, 1815-1860 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of compressed ovoid form with a slightly flared cylindrical neck and recessed oval foot, carved in varying relief with a continuous landscape scene with a scholar fishing from a grassy bank beside an open-sided meditation hut beneath two mature pine trees, while a fisherman sits in his sampan fishing in the same river, with foliated hills in the distance, the foot incised in seal script with a four character signature: Yao Weidong zuo (Made by Yao Weidong) Height: 6.2cm Provenance: Harriet Hamilton Collection The Chimiles Collection Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 24th November 1996, (a copy of the original invoice available) Published: Harriet Hamilton, Oriental Snuff Bottles, p.114, no. p.77 Illustrated: Front cover ICSBS JOURNAL, Winter 2006, Volume XXXVIII, number 3, and the back cover for a composite image During the early nineteenth century a small group of porcelain makers at Jingdezhen emerged from the traditionally anonymous production of ceramics to establish their names as individual artists. They specialized in carving porcelain and the most famous among them were Chen Guozhi and Wang Bingrong of the early to mid-century. There were several others, including Yao Weidong, however, and a few other names are recorded, some with only one bottle to their name. See, for instance, Moss, Graham, Tsang, The Art of the Chinese Snuff Bottle, nos. 248 - 251, where no. 251 appears to be by the same hand as this example, with identical style of mountains, figures and water weeds. That example is dated to 1821 and bears and Imperial mark of the Daoguang period. No other works are known by him Ω This Lot was imported from outside of the UK, under the Temporary Admission regime 5% import VAT will be charged on the ‘hammer” and 20% VAT will be charged on the ‘buyer’s premium
