A CARVED YIXING STONEWARE SNUFF BOTTLE1820-1900 To Be Sold Without Reserve Of compressed ovoid form, the narrow sides faceted to create an octagonal profile, the two main sides with convex, tapering octagonal panels, the foot square, with a concave, circular indentation, one side carved with flowering prunus branches, the other with a flowering orchid, one narrow side panel impressed with two seals, Yutai (‘Abundant peace’) and Fuji (‘Happiness Company’) Height: 6cm Provenance: Jade House, Hong Kong, December 2001 Hugh Moss (HK) Ltd, 30th January 2002, (a copy of the original invoice available) Fuji is the name of a commercial Yixing pottery company from the latter part of the Qing dynasty. The seal appears on a small group of wares of various forms. The other seal is probably an adopted sobriquet of a particular potter, but may simply be a good-wish seal, although it is unusual to find such wishes in the form of a seal in which more often individuals and commercial concerns are identified.
