The Death of Rostam, Iran, Mo'in-e Mosavver style, probably 18th century A gouache and gold illustration cut from a leaf of a manuscript of Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh on paper; remnants of text appear at the bottom of the image, written in five columns in Persian Nasta’liq script in black ink within reserved areas on a gold background. The image depicts the death of the hero Rostam, recognizable by his feline-headed headdress, surrounded by people mourning over his remains. On the reverse, the text is arranged around a title in red ink within a cartouche mentioning the revenge of Faramarz, son of the late Rostam, against the king of Kabul. Frame. 15 x 12 cm Fading of polychrome, small tears, stains, and creases; minor retouching; and the illumination, which was likely added at a later date.
