ROSENDO GONZÁLEZ CARBONELL (Barcelona, 1910–1984). “Motherhood.” Oil on Tablex. Signed in the lower left corner. Measurements: 73 x 60 cm; 106 x 92 cm (frame). Trained under Puig Perucho and at the Sabadell Academy of Fine Arts under Mayoral and Alsina, Rosendo González completed his studies in Barcelona at the Escuela de La Lonja and through sessions at the Real Círculo Artístico and the Sant Lluc Circle. Although he rarely held solo exhibitions, he participated in shows at the Galería Augusta, as well as in other official exhibitions, and was awarded a prize at the 1944 National Exhibition in Barcelona. Despite his reluctance to organize solo shows, his work was exhibited throughout Spain, as well as in Paris, Brussels, San Francisco, New York, and Toronto. He worked primarily in figure and portrait painting, though he also explored the landscape genre. A master of color, his painting—extremely sensitive—is characterized by a strong emphasis on technique. His defining characteristics were composition and volume, as well as a chiaroscuro defined by a rich interplay of skillfully applied light.
