French School, 18th century. "Lot and His Daughters." Oil on panel. Measurements: 28 x 20 cm; 45 x 39 cm (frame). This composition depicts a passage from the Book of Genesis (Genesis 19:30–38). After the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah by divine judgment, Lot and his two daughters took refuge in a cave. Believing themselves to be the last survivors on Earth and seeking to ensure their lineage, the daughters got their father drunk on wine in order to lie with him.
