Hiroshige ANDO / Utagawa HIROSHIGE (1797 - 1858). "Kawasaki: The Ferry on the Rokugo River". Approx. 34 cm x 21 cm (print size). Approx. 35.5 cm x 48.5 cm (including frame). Color woodblock print on paper. Sheet 3 from the famous series "53 Stations of the Tokaido." View of the Kawasaki-Juku post station and the Tamagawa River, the first river crossed along the Tokaido route. The Tamagawa was formerly known as the Rokugo, and the boats that carried people across the river were called “Rokugo ferries.” Originally, there was a large bridge, but it was swept away by floods several times, which is why these ferries came into use instead. Signed in the upper left corner. Attributed on a sticker on the reverse. Mat partially browned and yellowed. See photos for condition. Category: Asiatica
