Vintage Koilos Bed Plate Folding Camera Early 20th century Artist/designer/manufacturer: Unspecified European manufacturer (equipped with a Kenngott / Koilos shutter system). Materials: Wood case, black grain leather covering, chrome-plated brass rails and struts, glass optics, fabric bellows, and a celluloid focus scale. Marking(s): "Koilos" in a stylized white font engraved along the top curve of the shutter housing. Pneumatic / Air-escapement settings dial positioned on the upper-left of the shutter faceplate. "Meter" focus scale indicator strip visible on the lower-right section of the drop-down metal bed track. Cataloguer's note: This early 20th-century vertical-folding plate camera is a prime example of the hand-and-field cameras popular during the 1900s to 1910s. The defining feature of this specimen is its pneumatic Koilos shutter, which was patented by Kenngott around 1905–1906 and widely distributed to various camera makers across Europe. The dual metal guide rails on the drop-down bed allowed the photographer to precisely adjust focus for glass plates (typically 9x12 cm format), guided by the celluloid distance scale at the base.
