17TH-CENTURY ITALO-FLEMISH PAINTER (Active in Rome in the second half of the 17th century) David and Abigail Oil on canvas, 60 x 80 cm Fair condition We present in the auction catalog an interesting oil painting on canvas of good quality, depicting a biblical episode from the First Book of Samuel: the encounter between David and Abigail. The scene depicts Abigail offering gifts of food and wine to David and his army to appease his anger after her husband, Nabal, had refused to help them. On the left, David is depicted in armor with his dog, while Abigail is kneeling in the center, mediating the situation with an eloquent gesture. The painting, attributed to a Flemish Baroque painter—specifically Abraham Willlemsen or Willemsens (Antwerp, 1614–1672) based on its collection of provenance— may—with caution—be attributed to a skilled painter of Northern European origin with a clear connection to the Roman school of the second half of the 17th century, whose style is recognizable in the works of the circle of Pietro da Cortona (Cortona, 1596 – Rome, 1669).
