Chateaubriand (François-René) - Vierge (Daniel) *The Adventures of the Last Abencerage*. Paris: Edouard Pelletan, 1897. 1 volume, large 8vo, bound in full bronze-green morocco leather, in a slipcase edged and lined with yellow velvet. Ribbed spine with gilt title, all edges gilt. Inlaid with a magnificent chiseled leather plaque depicting two figures in black and gold, signed A. Lepere (Auguste Lepère). Endpapers bordered with green morocco and gold fillets framing red moiré, flying endpapers of identical red moiré. (Bound by Marius Michel). Ex-libris by Louis Barthou. Spine slightly sun-faded. Cover preserved without the spine. Copy No. 3, printed especially for Louis Barthou, Minister of the Interior. Printed on Chinese paper and embellished with a full-color watercolor by Daniel Vierge. Two versions of the engravings based on Daniel Vierge’s work: a pre-print signed in pencil by the engraver (Florian) and the engraving in the text. All on Chinese paper. A beautiful copy with very few pinholes, which is remarkable for this type of paper, which is often stained.
