243 - MUCHU: AN EARLY ANTLER NETSUKE OF A DOG AND PUP

MUCHU: AN EARLY ANTLER NETSUKE OF A DOG AND PUP By Muchu, signed Muchu 無注 Japan, 18 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved from the branch point of antler, its natural contours ingeniously incorporated into the compact and charming composition. The adult dog lies with its forepaws extended and head lowered, while its puppy climbs affectionately across its back, resting its forepaws upon the adult and raising its head with a contented expression. Both animals are sensitively modeled within the limitations of the material, their fur rendered with delicately incised lines. Good himotoshi to the underside and signed MUCHU within an oval reserve. The antler displaying a warm caramel patina. LENGTH 4.8 cm Condition: Good condition with typical natural flaws to the material. The natural hollow to the antler material at the dog’s arm has been filled, with associated minor retouching to the surrounding area. Literature comparison: Compare a related antler netsuke of a dog with similarly carved facial features, also unsigned, dated early 19 th century, 4.3 cm high, illustrated in Sydney L. Moss Ltd. (2016) Kokusai the Genius: and Stag-antler Carving in Japan, vol. I, and pp. 194-195, no. 52.
