† A RARE WOOD NETSUKE OF A KYOGEN MONKEY PERFORMER Unsigned Japan, late 18 th to early 19 th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Finely carved as a seated kyogen performer wearing a saru mask, holding a large ribbed wooden vessel before him with both hands. The exaggerated mask is animated by large slightly downcast eyes, deeply furrowed cheeks, and prominently pursed lips, creating the humorous expression characteristic of kyogen performance. The figure wears voluminous robes falling in broad, deeply carved folds, the sleeves gathered around the arms. Beautifully large and asymmetrical himotoshi underneath. LENGTH 4.1 cm Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear. The present netsuke depicts a masked monkey character from the comic tradition of kyogen theatre. Monkey masks (saru-men) were used in several kyogen performances, most famously Utsubozaru.
