Ɏ A FINE KYOTO SCHOOL IVORY NETSUKE OF A BOAR RESTING ON AUTUMN LEAVES Circle of Tomotada, unsigned Japan, Kyoto, 18th century, Edo period (1615-1868) Superbly carved as a recumbent boar resting upon a bed of autumn leaves, its legs drawn tightly beneath the compact body and the head lowered in peaceful repose, the eyes gently closed. The dense coat is rendered with minute incisions and attractively heightened with sumi staining, while the softly rounded body is sensitively modeled beneath the textured surface. The autumn foliage is crisply carved around the underside. The ivory has acquired a rich, warm yellow patina. Very generously excavated, asymmetrical himotoshi to the underside. LENGTH 4.6 cm Provenance: From a noted French private collection. Condition: Very good condition with minor typical wear and a few very light, smoothly worn losses to the edges of the leaves. One old filled age crack to the side of the face. Museum comparison: Compare a closely related ivory netsuke of a boar on autumn leaves, by Tomotada, 5.4 cm long, in the Metropolitan Museum of Arts, object number 81.1.91.
