KAIGETSU: A FINE ANTLER ‘LEAPING CARP’ KISERUZUTSU (PIPE CASE) By Kaigetsu, signed Kaigetsu 快月 Japan, 19th century Of otoshi-zutsu form, boldly carved with a monumental carp surging upward through vigorously curling waves, its powerful body occupying almost the entire length of the case. The broad head and overlapping scales are crisply delineated, while the fins and sweeping tail merge dynamically with the surrounding water. The waves are rendered in deeply cut, rhythmic scrolls, their foaming crests rising around the fish and cleverly incorporating the cord attachment. Signed KAIGETSU within a double-ingot reserve. LENGTH 20.5 cm Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear, a few natural age cracks, and very light nibbling to the mouth. The carp battling its way through turbulent waters is a celebrated symbol of perseverance, ambition, and success. The imagery ultimately derives from the Chinese legend of the carp that ascends the rapids of the Dragon Gate and, having overcome the current, transforms into a dragon. Here, the familiar subject is treated with exceptional boldness: the enormous fish dominates the narrow surface of the pipe case, its upward thrust amplified by the sweeping movement of the surrounding waves.
