Giovan Pietro Rizzoli, known as GIAMPIETRINO (active in Milan c. 1495–1540), workshop of Madonna and Child with an Apple, known as the Madonna della mela On the back, a sketch of a head, wax seals Oil on panel, two reinforcement keys (restorations, wear) 54 x 40 cm Giampietrino’s *Madonna with the Apple* enjoyed considerable success; we know of nine autograph versions featuring variations in the landscape, the Child’s pose, or the Virgin’s veil. We can compare our painting to the *Virgin and Child* housed at the Castello Sforzesco in Milan (see the catalog of the Museo d’Arte Antica del Castello Sforzesco, vol. 1, Milan, 1997, no. 207, reprinted on p. 307); the panel’s dimensions (53 x 40 cm) are comparable to those of our painting (Expert: Laurent CALES)
