Office armchair made of mahogany and carved and molded mahogany veneer. The enveloping, gondola-shaped backrest is openwork with three balusters featuring palmette motifs. The swivel seat, caned and upholstered with a fawn-colored leather cushion, rests on four flared saber legs with scrollwork. Louis Philippe period. Marked “BB.” Attributed to Georges-Alphonse Jacob-Desmalter (1799–1870) H. 87.5 cm – W. 65.5 cm – D. 60 cm (signs of wear, restorations, minor losses, stains on the leather) Note: We can observe that in the watercolor by James Roberts (1800– 1867), *Louis-Philippe’s Study in Neuilly*, King Louis-Philippe is seated in the same model of armchair as the one we are presenting for sale. Two swivel armchairs identical to ours and crafted by Georges- Alphonse Jacob-Desmalter (1799–1870) are held in the Mobilier National under the numbers GME 9368 (at the Tuileries in 1829, at the Ministry of State at the beginning of the Second Empire. Returned to the Garde-meuble in 1883, it was sent that same year to the Palais-Royal) and GMT 10821 (donated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, undated (Mobilier National archives, 1894 Inventory and Acquisitions, volume 4, f° 160). Another model, but with a baluster base and made by “ Jacob Frères” (Georges (II) Jacob (1768–1803) and his brother, François-Honoré-Georges Jacob (1770–1841)) was likely delivered around 1800, during the furnishing of the Tuileries Palace, and is preserved in the Mobilier National under the number GME 9352.
